Introduction to Meroe

Meroe is a UNESCO World Heritage site of the ancient Kingdom of Kush, located on the east bank of the Nile River in Sudan It differs from Egyptian pyramids with thousands that were built between around 300 BC to about AD 350. Unlike the tourist-packed pyramids of Egypt that loom over visitors like a Disneyfied theme park, Meroë is smaller and much quieter. The more than 200 pyramids dotting the desert horizon offer a rare look into Sudanese history and burial traditions of ancient Nubia.

The best time to visit the Pyramids of Meroe is from October to April when temperatures drop and exploration is more comfortable. Especially in the summer months, when it can get incredibly hot and moving things outdoors is very difficult.

Getting There

Meroë is often visited from the Sudanese capital Khartoum. Here are your options:

By Car: The majority of people visiting the meroe pyramids do so via car, whether you drive yourself or hire a local driver. It takes about 3 hours to get there, though the scenery of the beautiful desert makes it all worthwhile.

Bus: With buses and minibusses operating from Khartoum to cities around the country, bus services in Sudan are generally inconsistent with schedules. This is more for the adventurous.

Join a Tour: Take a guided tour to learn the historical background and make sure you hit all your key sites with none of the drama.

Accommodation

pyramids of Meroehas a few accommodation options, while Atbara and Shendi each have a selection of places to stay. So, my advice is as follows.

Camp in the pyramids of Meroe:This unique camping experience is located near the pyramids, so it has basic facilities and an authentic desert feel.

Shendi Hotels: Located a short drive away, hotels in Shendi vary from budget to mid-range and provide staying basis amenities.

Atbara: This small town has a few hotels, and while it is farther away from Meroë you may consider using this as your base to explore the ruins.

What to See

The Pyramids

Naturally, the highlight of any sojourn is the pyramids of Meroe themselves. The pyramids are divided into three groups on the site;

Northern Group:The largest pyramid is part of this group showcasing Kushite architecture at its grandest.

Southern Group These temples are more damaged, but a bit quieter.

Western Group — This group has smaller pyramids and is often quieter because fewer tourists come here.

Royal Tombs

The mostfamous pyramids are at Nuri, which served as tombs for Kushite royalty. Some of the walls in these tombs are still beautifully painted, as they must have been over 2 millenniums ago when nobles were buried here with their belongings and it covers an area of four main areas across northern Sudan.

The Meroë Museum

You might want to pass by the Meroë Museum in one of the Nubian towns, either before or after your pyramid visit With the museum exhibiting many of these items, from tools to sculptures and everyday artifacts, it is a great place to get insight into what life was like in this region when Kushite culture was at its peak.
